Let me first begin by defining a salad spinner l. A salad spinner is a device used to remove the excess water and moisture from salad ingredients after washing them. There are 4 parts to the spinner: the lid and pullcord, the inner lid for storage, the colander, and outer bowl. So, looking at the picture of this item, you can see every part but the inner lid, which is underneath the lid with the pullcord. To understand the mechanism, when you flip the pullcord lid over, there is a bar that the pullcord is wound around. The pullcord must be wound up completely before you can spin the salad.
To use this item, you assemble it like this: colander goes into the outer bowl, salad greens go into colander. Making sure the pullcord is completely wound around the bar underneath the lid, place the lid on the bowl (without inner lid). To spin, give the pullcord a hard pull, making sure the cord doesn't become completely unwound. That's how this works; you pull the cord sharply and it gets pulled back around the bar underneath the lid. You keep pulling sharply and it spins the salad and the water is released from the colander and is caught in the outer bowl.
If you so desire, you can wipe out the outer bowl of the excess water and place the freshly-spun greens into it for storage. You can use the inner lid supplied to keep the salad fresh, but the inner lid does fit snugly on the bowl and will keep the salad fresh. I wash the spinner by hand, even though it's dishwasher safe.
I have noticed a big difference in the freshness of my salad after using the spinner. Salad does last longer when the excess water is removed, dressing isn't soupy and it tastes better all around.
Use the spinner with every salad ingredient: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, broccoli, etc. You could use it with any washed vegetable.
