My personal favorites from Dean Koontz are the "Odd Thomas Series" that is a well done first person fictional account of the life of the appropriately missnamed (maybe) hero, and a hurmorous horror novel "Tick Tock".

Many of Dean Koontz books have dogs as favorite characters, and a few even have cats as unusual characters. Terrible Chester in the Dean Koontz "Odd Thomas" series is a great personification of cat, in the cat/human relationship.
