            Television

Trying to make sense of high definition television today can be very confusing.  Let's try to make sense of an all by comparing some numbers of television's that were used a seeing, and the new formats that are being offered. Televisions come in LCD an Plasma, but the technologies are close to equal in both price and reliability. Television has come a long way in a few years, and soon all transmissions will be in high definition. Cable companies can still transmit the older NTSC  format. Televisions will still be the way we watch videos, and high definition videos will soon be common. A high definition television will be the way to watch them.

The more pixels, the better the picture looks if every thing else is equal

Here’s what happens to the pictures in standard television format (NTSC)

On a 19-inch TV
On a 25-inch TV
On a 32 inch TV
On a 32 inch TV
On a 50 inch TV
1600 pixels per square inch and it looks pretty good.
1000 pixels per square inch and it looks OK
625 pixels per square inch and starts looking a little grainy
   400 pixels per square inch
256 pixels per square inch.                                      Oh well, it's big

Now and see what happens when television goes to 720 x1280.  These are the less expensive HDTV’s on the market.

First because of the different aspect ratio, to the television that's tall enough to watch well we need to start around 32 inches.

Pixels per square inch shows how much detail is in the television picture. This is the beginning of making the choice, but remember that a pixel is a point of light, and that the more points of light, the brighter.   1080i television sets are usually appear brighter than the 720 pixel counterparts.

40 inch and 42 inch televisions seem to be the popular sizes, but you can still get good resolution at larger sizes.

Hope this helps in deciding what type of television to buy.
